Water and Fire; all you need.
In this Autumn weather like never before, water and fire come together beautifully
I know this is late and do not like to be late. But it’s school holidays still and there’s been lots of nothingness happening here, all of which requires my attention. I know you’l understand and I’m hoping this email hits at just the right tim eon a Sunday afternoon for a read and a relax.
It’s warm, well hot really and there’s not a breath of wind. Well there is, it’s light, so light it could not move a candle, still, not stifling like Summer. This weather, it draws you into relaxation.
Her hair is stranded like it’s salty, we’ve been swimming. Her teeth chattered and arms shook when she jumped back in the boat but she’ll stay in her swimmers all day, little toosh dirty from the mud and rocks back on shore. The boys are fishing and finally everything is quiet. We tried a canoe together but she turned home telling me I was mean. Back on shore, for hours she’s been gathering leaves, one by one and then in piles to keep the tiniest of fires going. The grassy, leafy, thick smoulder will permeate everything but I like the smell. This is child’s play in purity. She does not ask for recognition, just potters from one tals to the next, now she’staken herself back to the shore and collecting clay to take home in an enamel dish.
The fire is well alight now; she adds the kindling. From where I watch, I can feel the heat blow on the whisper of a breeze, it’s so warm compared to the shady chill that slides in as the sun drops behind the hills.
This is autumn - the very best of it - warm and cold, swims and stick piles alight, water and fire. That is all a child really needs - water in summer, fire in winter. the most natural of elements and in a hot winter, this is a worry. Is this the start of what’s to come? The new norm? I’m pushing it aside and allowing it to be so.
