There’s a lot of bird poo around at the moment. Every eave, entrance, ediface. There’s especially a lot of it in my flower den, which is the garage, laden with not cars but old paint tins, extra fridges, millions of nuts, bolts and bits of things, the gun safe and the boxes of cans and bottles the kids are gathering to put into the cash retrieval in town. Swallows - maybe they are the Fairy Martin kind? - have taken up residence too. Much to the delight of my daughter who is loving being around the flowers, while watching the feeding of the birds unfold as if it were a nature documentary on TV. ‘I can see their mouths’ she says and you can. We watch as the speck of food is handed, or mouthed, from mother to babe, one at a time, then off she flies to forage more. My own mother, her grandmother gave her some birdseed and fresh mince to try and make it easier for the busy mother of newborns but it sat untouched. One morning last week I found the body of a baby bird on the ground, no feathers, just wrinkly skin and big unopened eyes. I showed Florence and she was sad. To pay homage she popped it on a pillow and sat next to it on the lawn under the tree for the rest of the afternoon. Wherever she went the dead bird came along. So although there is still a lot of poo everywhere, I am glad because she’s had a front row seat to the cycle of life, which has shown itself to her, unplanned and unpredictable.
