I’ve been walking this week. It’s been good. I crunch down the track, in a hurry - to get the walk done, tick it off. Close by there’s a sort of gurgling sound that I immediately recognise to be a Kookaburra.
I stop. Pull my phone out of my pocket like a robot, hoping to be invisible. He’s only a small one, I see and he’s about 5 metres from me amongst the trees. A proper recording of a kookaburra is one of the podcasting sound effects I haven’t yet been able to snaffle. I scroll to find the app and the young’en flies off. I remain still with eyes darting everywhere, trying to see if he’s not just hiding.
I give up and walk off but he comes back in to land and starts his song. What comes out surprises me. It starts as a sound akin to the low drone of a reeving motorcycle engine and then before we hit the laugh, it peters out in a sort of gurgling sound. I realise, as a young’en, maybe he’s never laughed before - and then I choose to believe that he’s practising with me as his audience. I immediately love that Kookaburra and stay a while.

This pile of things to read
You have to read this. Play On is special course for athletic adolescents developed by total pocket-rocket Olympic race-walker Jemima Montag in conjunction with the IOC - it’s aim is to stop teenage girls from dropping out of sport when they hit adolescence, puberty and periods. Here’s the Instagram page.
“Play On places female Olympians and Paralympians in front of young girls in schools or sports clubs at the critical age [12-18] when they tend to drop out of sport,” she says. “This creates an immediate female athlete role model for the audience – sparking curiosity about their own place on the sporting field.”
The NY Times guide to Tasmania: The Land of ‘Wild’ Sauna’s and Pagan Festivals.
The 5 Day friendship challenge. Just for fun. “Strengthen your bonds and find out what kind of friend you are with this weeklong friendship tuneup.”

Enjoy the remnants of your weekend lovely people. We’ll be outside, sorting, and then dashing inside often for Olympics and then back outside again. Remember this is the free edition of Company on Sundays - if you want, you can support this work by becoming a paying subscriber. I wonder how many of you actually read this part?! Show me you do - and I’ll send you a special email.
