Happy Sunday dear readers, hoping you have had an enjoyable week - full of Spring blooms on your walk, or drive or potter in the garden. I mowed the lawn twice this week and for the moment, the novelty is still feeling ace.
How much time is too much time on your phone? When you start to prefer hanging out with your phone more than you do with your friends irl……. Sometimes I have to admit, I teeter. In my head any great length of ‘time on my phone’ means reading meaningful emails and substack newsletters - but in actual fact, before I get there, there is always a ‘quick’ scroll of the apps which sometimes means there is no meaningful reading at all as I succumb to the sticky web of algorithms. All around me people are starting to take heed of social media warnings, and catch themselves, like I have been, realising that they went to do a quick check of the weather and emerged from Instagram 20 minutes later - still no weather checked. The ‘Mainstreaming of Loserdom’ is an interest observation on this too (see below). What I am seeing on social media is not photos and life updates from my friends as it once was, it’s vids of artists painting, men riding motorbikes, I couldn’t even tell you what the rest is - that’s how impactful it is. I do not have a solution, this is my observation - that over time, more and more and more mindless social media consumption has eeked it’s way into my life - without me even wanting it. I’d be really interested to hear if anyone - has implemented some new house or personal rules of late? Or even if you’ve had a moment, like me, where you’ve realised what they hell you’ve been doing for the last 15 minutes?!

It’s cooler now to stay in bed on a Friday night, than to go out partying but according to this piece apparently if you do go out partying - you cannot wait to get home to your phone. The Mainstreaming of Loserdom - is spot on. As someone who most certainly prefers a Friday night in, reading on my phone, this really resonated, I thought it was just me but it seems its the young’ens too.
‘but it does feel like a larger societal failing that the activity people crave the most is scrolling on their phones, watching other people live their lives.’
I think you’ll love the ‘Desk Tour’ series on
