I still write a list every. single. day. It’s not incase I forget, it’s just a function of overload, a conscious stream of allllll the things I want to do on any given day. It’s not really a guide post so much as a coping mechanism. So every morning when I walk into the bathroom, I see the beautiful bath. ‘I am so having a bath today, a little treat for myself, I’ll read my book. I’d better put it on the list,’. Because the toilet and the bath are in the same room (sorry), this thought process happens multiple times everyday.
It never makes the list and I never have a bath. Well not quite never, but the ratio of intent to success is low.
A similar thing happens when I walk into the bedroom and see the bed - beautifully made and snuggly - I think, ‘I’ll treat myself and have a rest this afternoon’. It’s best to keep away from the bedroom. Actually there’s a term for this doing the rounds this week. Bed Rotting. Hmmm.
Are you a bath person? Or can you not stand the idle time, spent relaxing when you should be doing something else? The itch that this might be lazy. Elise Loehnen calls it the ‘internal cattle prod’, which is brilliant. (Here she is chatting on RN’s Life Matters this week, about her book On Our Best Behaviour; The seven deadly sins and the price women pay to be good.) The fact that I don’t quite make it to the bath never worries me, I don’t feel like I have failed, but I’m sick of having it on the list!
As it’s the long weekend, I think maybe we could all be kind to ourselves and allow a pinch of nap or bath time. This to be honest won’t be happening for me as we will be in Sydney, but be sure dear readers, there will be time made for it next week.
