Driving the school run* is a seasonal litmus test of sorts here on the southern tablelands of NSW. Right now, pale baubles of fluff on prickly branches burst from the roadside and into the paddocks. This bush, which I think is just beautiful, is ‘spreading wattle’ and it’s everywhere this year. I don’t know why, I’ve not been here long enough to tell you with any certainty - but I love to hypothesise while I drive.
It’s going to get really dry soon. This year is going to be a Bushfire year, I bet. It’s usually horror stories but perhaps it’s just that we’ve had a wet winter, the season here is looking promising and nature is responding in the way it knows best - by thrusting big, blousy, dazzling flowers along our roadsides as if they were the aisle to somewhere, something much more grand that just the everyday schoolyard.
* The school run from home to Gunning is my favourite drive. I feel like you’ll know it too - it’s always in my feed.

Have you seen the Saltbush Babes podcast? It’s the work of Em Armstrong from Saltbush Stretch based in Hay, NSW but also online. She’s a firecracker so this pod is high energy, refreshing and super fun - and talks about things like fanny packs, botox, food and other funny stuff! I love this from a chick based on-farm in the middle of nowhere.
Also Mia Freedman on The Squiz’ Newsmakers.
And Mark Bouris on meat.
