Hello! Welcome - You are reading Company on Sundays a newsletter initially designed for people in rural Australia who couldn’t get the Sunday newspapers, but now it’s enjoyed all over by women everywhere. (especially this week, I hope, if you too are feeling tetchy) Sx
It’s cold where we live. It can be hot in Summer but in Winter the weather can be positively English. Foggy, drizzly, cold and wet*. This week the weather has been making me tetchy. It also happens to be school holidays. We have had 5 straight days of driving hours (+++) for activities. It does not dull a child’s enthusiasm for life. Rain, wind, cold and not much room or energy for the activities we would usually distract ourselves with. After all the driving I want a break, to sit or lie in bed and read. I make the mixture for pancakes. Still I am tetchy. Children cook, spilling it everywhere. They are delicious but the mixture is all over the freshly cleaned stove, benches and floor. I clean again. We eat together. Tetchiness remains. We are bored. I am bored. We don’t want to go outside. The TV room is delightfully warm, but it’s small. We all hang here. Tetchiness is here too - and it’s no only mine. How do you do it in the UK, in the climates that are dark, windy, cold - for longer, day-in-day-out? How do you do it? This is just one day. I think about the mantra that you must lean in to your emotions - boredom. I am leaning in. But tomorrow I will not be bored, we will have jobs. Tetchiness be gone, relaxation be appreciated and holidays be defined.
*Still we never complain about the rain. 4mms yesterday, more today. We will take all we can get. A dry Spring , El Nino induced is on the horizon, apparently.
